Exploring Alaska in Style: My Norwegian Bliss Cruise Adventure
It all begins with an idea.
This past summer, I swapped sand and sunshine for glaciers and wildlife, setting sail on an Alaskan adventure aboard the Norwegian Bliss. It wasn’t just a cruise; it was an experience—complete with jaw-dropping scenery, top-notch excursions, and a ship that felt more like a floating resort. Here’s a look at the highlights of the trip, from life onboard to the unforgettable Alaskan destinations.
The Norwegian Bliss: A Home at Sea
The Norwegian Bliss is a marvel of modern cruising. Spacious, beautifully designed, and impressively clean, it felt more like a boutique hotel than a ship. My stateroom was cozy, with plush bedding and smartly designed storage, making it the perfect retreat after days of adventure. And let me just say, the commitment to cleanliness onboard was chef’s kiss. With hand-washing stations conveniently placed (especially near the buffet), staying healthy felt effortless. There was always a charming crew member singing a washy washy song to keep the emphasis on cleanliness lighthearted!
The observation lounge was my favorite spot, offering panoramic views of Alaska’s stunning landscapes. Whether it was snow-capped mountains or tranquil waters, this was where I had my “wow” moments—often with a cup of coffee in hand. The ship also had plenty of ways to unwind, from hot tubs to an adults-only section that was a haven of peace. And for anyone looking to stay active, the upper-deck gym and jogging track were ready to go—though I’ll admit I spent more time admiring the view than breaking a sweat.
Dining & Drinks: A Culinary Delight
The food on the Norwegian Bliss was a journey of its own. We splurged on two specialty restaurants: La Cucina, where rustic Italian dishes stole the show, and Le Bistro, a charming French restaurant that made every bite feel special. Both were worth every penny. Pro tip: Never skip the dessert!
For drinks, the Sugarcane Mojito Bar quickly became our go-to. Each mojito was fresh and flavorful, and we made it our mission to sample as many as possible (responsibly, of course). The District Brew House was another standout, offering a wide selection of craft beers, including regional favorites from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. It added a nice local touch to the experience.
Entertainment & Nightlife: Fun for Everyone
The entertainment on the Bliss was nothing short of impressive. From Broadway-caliber performances like The Jersey Boys to the toe-tapping tunes of a Beatles tribute band, the shows kept us captivated every night. The comedians at The Social Comedy and Nightclub brought plenty of laughs, and nightly karaoke with familiar friendly faces was the perfect end to most of our days on ship.
For families and adventure-seekers, the ship offered plenty of thrills, including a go-kart track, laser tag, water slides, and mini-golf. It was fun just watching everyone get into the spirit of it all. The casino also provided a bit of excitement—perfect for passing the time while waiting for dinner or a show.
Alaskan Excursions: A Front-Row Seat to Nature
The ports of call were just as memorable as life onboard. Each destination gave us a new perspective on Alaska’s wild beauty:
• Juneau: Whale-watching was a highlight, with humpbacks putting on a show we’ll never forget as we witnessed the rare sight of whales “bubble feeding”. The Mendenhall Glacier was equally awe-inspiring, a massive wall of blue ice that made the landscape feel otherworldly. The short hike to the glacier was a nice stretch of the legs and there was an equally impressive waterfall too.
• Sitka: A food-tasting tour introduced us to smoked salmon and other local delicacies. The flavors were as rich as the stories behind them, giving us a deeper appreciation for Alaska’s culinary traditions. (Yes, we brought a few cans of smoked salmon home with us).
• Hoonah Village: Here, we ventured into bear country for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. Watching these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience. Our guide was a native tribe leader that had one of the kindest and most genuine hearts. He shared so much about his life and culture that made this tour an even more rich experience than we expected!
• Ketchikan: From the towering totems at Totem Bight State Park to the lively lumberjack show, this stop was full of culture and fun. We even got a private tour of the crafting area where we met the master carvers and saw their current projects. The Native dance performance added depth to our understanding of Alaska’s heritage, while the lumberjack antics added a dash of humor to complete the day.
A Journey to Treasure
My Alaskan cruise aboard the Norwegian Bliss was everything I hoped it would be—and more. From the comfort and luxury of the ship to the raw beauty of Alaska’s wilderness, every moment felt special. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a perfect mix of both, this cruise has it all. If Alaska is on your travel wish list, I can’t recommend the Bliss enough—it truly lives up to its name.
